Description

Gouache on paper laid on board representing sail boats at mooring and a coastal town. Probably a view on the Riviera. Signed twice, upper left and lower left by Paul Ackerman, 1908-1981, French. Probably executed in the 1940's.

Approximately 16 3/4 by 23 inches. 42cm by 58cm. Framed about 20 1/4 by 26 1/4 inches. 52cm by 67cm.

Condition

Very fine condition. No flaws or damage. No sign of past restoration. No inpainting under UV examination. The frame has some light wear.

Provenance

This painting was previously sold by Christie's in the 1980's and bears Christie's label on the back.

Biography

Born in Romania in 1908, Ackerman's family moved to France when he was 4 years old.  He studied and worked with Fernand Leger and later Bonnard. At the end of WWII he actively started to exhibit with shows in Paris, London, Frankfurt, Milan and Montreal. In 1950 he won the Pacquement prize.  Individual exhibitions at Galerie Greuze and elsewhere since 1947. Some of his works are in the collections of the Paris Museum of Modern Art, Paris National Library, Kassel museum, Ringling museum in Florida.
