Italian Mid-Renaissance Statue
“Polychrome Wood”

Description

An Italian polychrome wood sculpture of the mid-renaissance 1475-1525 in the typical contrapposto stance, looking strong and athletic, dressed in the Classical style, all of these elements being typical and characteristic of Renaissance sculpture and representation. Probably made of walnut.

Dimensions

13.75in (347 mm) tall

Condition

Entirely original. No sign of restoration. In some spots the paint is entirely gone as well as the two foundations, the bottom red size and the white gesso primer, so the wood is showing. In other spots, the paint and white gesso primer are gone, showing the red size. Finally, in some spots only the paint is gone, revealing the white gesso primer.

Note: "Size" is a glaze used over wood, before applying the gesso primer and the surface coats. Red size is a mixture of animal glue and red clay.
