Edmond van Coppenolle
“Chinoiserie vase and Still Life Flowers ”

Description

Chinoiserie vase and Still Life Flowers by Edmond van Coppenolle - Belgian/French (1843 -1914). Oil on canvas, signed.

Van Coppenolle was from an old, distinguished Flemish family. He was born in Ronse, Belgium in 1843. His parents moved to Paris just before the War of 1870. Edmond studied art in Paris, and during this time became friendly with landscape and still-life painter Ernest Quost (1844-1931).

In 1878 van Coppenolle moved to the country village of Montigny, which is near Versailles. Monet and Gauguin had property near Montigny. The village was known for its ceramic factory, and van Coppenolle worked as a designer at the main factory. He also recruited many respected artists to design for the factory including Quost.

Van Coppenolle is best known for his detailed, exuberant paintings of flowers and still-life's. He also did many meticulous studies of hens, roosters, and other farm animals. Van Coppenolle exhibited actively in his local galleries and regional art shows. Many of his works were lost during World War I and the almost complete destruction of Montigny during World War II. The Wunderly painting is a rarity, and its subject matter, van Coppenolle's most popular.

He married Alexandrine Léontine Denis in March 1878. Her parents ran an inn called the Auberge Saint Petersbourg. They had son Jacques van Coppenolle, who also became a renowned painter. Jacques exhibited in the Salon d'Automne and Salon des Independents. He was drafted for World War I and died in 1914 at age thirty-six.

This is a very high-quality painting. As in many of Van Coppenolle's best paintings, he used earth-tones inspired by the Flemish and Dutch Old Master's. The elements of the composition are well balanced. This painting is a classic, which will retain its value for many years.
