Harold Newton
“Floridian Landscape Pair”

Description

Harold Newton, "Floridian Landscape Pair." 1970's, oil on board. One signed lower left, one unsigned.

Newton (1934-1994) was one of the original "Highwaymen," a group of traveling Floridian painters, most of which were African-American. They generally painted on board and created idyllic tropical landscapes and sold their paintings on the side of the highway, thus earning their name.

These paintings were bought directly from Newton around the time they were painted. The paint colors are the same in both paintings and the brush strokes are identical such as how he painted trunks of small trees or plants with one long thin curved brush stroke. Further, the frames and discoloration of the boards, are evidently identical. *Please note, these are sold as a pair and will not be sold individually.
